Carrot Bread from Humanity Has Declined (Jinrui wa Suitaishimashita)

Humanity has Declined is probably one of my favorite anime ever, and I’m not gonna lie, the fairy hi-jinks have a lot to do with that. The carrot bread, talking chickens, wanton desire for candy, that cute dance they do in the opening sequence…somehow I find all of it hilarious.

So, I thought, everyone likes a good snack, and especially if it includes bread filled with tasty fillings. And that is when I decided to recreate an edible version of the carrot bread. This little guy starts off so cute and welcoming…

And then all of a sudden he’s ripping himself open and bleeding out carrot juice….There’s not really much else to say here.

Ingredients

So, you can really fill your carrot bread with anything you want. As a guideline, though, you will need:

  1. Bread (2 slices per carrot bread)

  2. A red filling (Jam/Jelly/Marmalade)

  3. A little bit of water

  4. A sticking agent (butter, peanut butter, Nutella)

  5. 2 white Candy Melts for the eyes, or 2 white chocolate circles

  6. Black food dye/ black gel/ black frosting

  7. Candy for the mouth, hands, and legs. I used Hubba Bubba Bubble tape for the mouth, and AirHeads to form the arms and legs, but you can get creative and use whatever you like.

How to Assemble Carrot Bread

First, start off by thinning out your jam filling by mixing it up with a little bit of water. You want it to be a smooth, pour-able consistency so that it can leak out of your bread no problemo. Below is just a picture of the jam I used.

Then, prepare your bread slices. Cover one piece completely in your sticking agent, but cover only the edges of the other piece.

Then, spoon your jam mixture into the middle, trying to leave about an inch free of jam on all sides. Then, stick your other piece of bread on top, and tidy up around the edges.

Next, you need to work on the details. First, I rimmed the white chocolate circles in black, to give them a little outline, and then stuck them on where I wanted them. I then cut out the mouth, placed it on, and started to shape the hands and legs.

I found this part to be the hardest, but if you just play around with your candy, I am sure you can achieve an acceptable shape. The AirHeads worked really well for me, because they were malleable but still held any shape I gave them. If you want to give it an authentic gray look, you can get some silver luster dust and dust that over the white airhead to make it metallic.

Then stick the arms and legs in between the pieces of bread. Draw on your shade marks with more of that food dye/food gel/ frosting (I used a food marker).

To finish off the look, split apart the top of the sandwich and gently press on the little stomach of your carrot bread. All that jam will come leaking out! 😀 😀 😀

And that’s it! This snack was really fun and simple to make, so I hope you give it a try. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to respond below. If there are any anime foods you’d like to see, let me know below! Thanks for reading, and have a lovely day! 🙂
