Crunchyroll #59: Melon Soda Float from “Restaurant to Another World”
Learn how to make it here!
Melon soda floats! The epitome of a perfect summer day. It’s cool, refreshing, creamy, and sweet. A delightful combination of liquidy sweetness with cold and creamy ice cream. Throw in some ice chunks, and you’ve even got a unique mouthfeel, different from a regular old float. It’s crunchy and creamy and all kinds of amazing. Honestly, if I was coming out of a desert, this is what I would order as well.
I love root beer floats- the typical, very traditional American dessert, mostly consumed during the summer at picnics, carnivals, and ball games. I have fond memories of making these with my grandmother- they were her favorite dessert. She would buy us specialty root beer or, sometimes, we even made our own! She’s one of the biggest reasons I love to cook, and I’m sure she would LOVE to try a melon soda float. So, I was drawn to this recipe the minute I saw it. Honestly, this variation of the root beer float is so fun and refreshing, I think anyone would love to try it. Except probably my friend Sarah who hates soda, and also hates ice cream.
What really struck me with this recipe is the ice. I’ve never seen ice in any kind of soda float before. Until now, it was my understanding that the ice cream replaced the ice to act as a cooling agent in the soda. But I know one of my favorite thing about root beer floats is when the cold soda and the cold ice cream react, and little icy pockets form on the scoop of ice cream. It’s crunchy and sweet and provides a different taste and texture than just smooth ice cream. I figured that the ice chips would do something similar. I was happy to find that I was right! Though it seems a bit weird, adding ice chips in really added to the eating experience. I loved them!
Here’s the thing, though…this recipe is most successful when the melon soda you get is actually green. I truly believe that mine would have been better if it was green. SADLY, the only melon soda I could find was CLEAR. WHY anyone would do such a thing to melon soda is beyond me. I was unpleasantly surprised by this when I started filming. Alas, since I’m just finishing moving apartments, and my WI-FI access is limited, it was either put this out or go without a recipe this week to share with you. I was going to save this recipe and try again, but then I went and filmed a reaction to eating it…which resulted in some of the funniest footage I’ve ever recorded. Editing the below video made me laugh a LOT harder than I’ve laughed in awhile, so I wanted to go ahead and share this recipe with you, even though it’s not perfect.
Watch the video below to see how I choked and almost died eating this float. Remember to buy green melon soda when you make this!
